The dangerous precedent in Ukraine
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko confirmed the intention to close the TV channels 112 and NewsOne, or to significantly affect the structure of owners of media resources. Such a conclusion can be drawn from the official statement of the party “Bloc of Petro Poroshenko “Solidarnist”.
On Friday, October 5, a statement was posted on the party’s official website. Here is its text (translation): «The official change of the owner of the «NewsOne» TV channel to the people’s deputy T.Kozak, a person from the close surroundings of Viktor Medvedchuk, is the final and indisputable proof that Russia is the real ideological beneficiary of the channel and V. Medvedchuk, the real owner.
In this regard, the party «BPP» Solidarnist «considers that the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine should take the necessary measures in accordance with the adopted Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada.
The statements of party «Batkivshchyna», the leader of which is a constant participant of the broadcasts on pro-Russian TV channels, testify to the long and consistent communication of Yulia Tymoshenko with the TV channel «NewsOne» and prove the dependence of this political force on the masters of Portnov, Medvedchuk and Putin».
Since the name of the party “Bloc of Petro Poroshenko“ Solidarnist” is the name and surname of the current president of Ukraine, it is fair to assume that the head of the Ukrainian state at least shares this position.
A dangerous precedent for democracy has emerged in Ukraine: a political party, the unofficial leader of which is the highest official in the state and the chairman of the NSDC, «believes that the NSDC should apply the necessary measures in accordance with the Verkhovna Rada Decree».
This phrase can be interpreted as an attempt by the party to influence the NSDC. A political party may express an opinion on what to do or not do to the NSDC. But if a political party, the unofficial leader of which is the chairman of the NSDC, demands “to take all necessary measures”, this can be interpreted as putting pressure on the NSDC. In particular, the members of the National Security Council, some of whom are subordinate to the President of Ukraine, Chairman of the National Security and Defense Council and the unofficial leader of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc Solidarity party.
A dangerous precedent is created when a political party tries to exert direct pressure on the NSDC.
We will note that earlier the people’s deputy of Ukraine from the party “Bloc of Petro Poroshenko“ Solidarity” Oleg Barna insulted a journalist during the execution of his professional duties.
However, the party did not respond to the incident, although it caused outrage among the journalistic community.
In the Verkhovna Rada, the behavior of Oleg Barna will be reviewed at the meeting of the Regulation Committee.
Such situations and trends indicate an increased risk of the use by political parties of illegal methods of exerting pressure on opponents and distorting election results.
